What is a Birth Doula?

A birth doula is a non-medical professional that provides educational, emotional, and physical support before, during, and after childbirth. Continuous support during labor is shown to improve the overall health of mother and baby. It has been associated with shortened labor time, lower need for medical interventions or pain relief, and a reduction in the risk of cesarean section.

The goal of a birth doula is for the mother to feel safe, be informed, and feel that her wishes are heard. Being heard by the provider is a leading variable in the satisfaction of the birth experience. Birth is fluid, it requires adaptation, movement, changes in positions, and perspectives. It is truly a dance between baby and mother.

A birth doula may go from being a cheerleader to a quiet observer, listener, and comforter.

Doula Care with Iowa Black Doula Collective

We’re the Iowa Black Doula Collective, a community-rooted network dedicated to training and equipping a diverse cohort of doulas to serve BIPOC families.

Who we are:

A group of passionate birth-justice advocates and experienced educators committed to dismantling racial and cultural barriers in maternal care across Iowa.

What we do:

  • Train and prepare doulas from varied backgrounds in evidence-based, equity-centered practices.
  • Support BIPOC families through prenatal education, compassionate labor and birth advocacy, and postpartum care.
  • Cultivate connections among birthworkers, families, and health-care professionals to strengthen local networks and share best practices.

Why it matters:

BIPOC individuals often face higher rates of maternal mortality, limited culturally responsive care, and a lack of supportive community during the childbearing journey. By empowering doulas of color with rigorous training and creating collaborative spaces, we help close health-outcome gaps, amplify family voices, and build a more just, caring system for every parent and baby in our state.

All pricing is conveniently located on the schedule page under each individual service.

We are an equal opportunity organization and will not allow discrimination based upon age, ethnicity, ancestry, gender, national origin, disability, race, size, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background, or any other status prohibited by applicable law.
